Will AI recommend your brand? How to build visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode

Customers increasingly do not review ten search results. They ask a question, receive a shortlist and ask AI to compare the options. A brand must now be more than visible. It must be understandable, credible and retrievable in the right context.

Search is no longer just a list of links.

For years, companies competed for a position in search results. Today they increasingly compete for a place in the answer as well.

That is a material difference. In classic search, the user sees several sources and compares them. In generative search, the model does part of that work: it breaks the question into smaller ones, looks for information, compares it and produces a synthesis.

According to Salesforce, the use of agentic search as the first step in the purchase journey grew by 200% in a year. McKinsey’s research shows that more than half of consumers already use AI when shopping, and for almost a third of the AI users surveyed, AI search or chat was the single most influential source in their latest purchase decision.

This is not the death of Google or the end of SEO. Google states plainly that there is no separate technical shortcut into AI Overviews or AI Mode. Indexability, content quality, credibility, usefulness and the ability to understand a page correctly still matter.

What changes is the outcome a brand is competing for. Ranking high is not enough. The brand also has to be interpreted correctly, compared fairly and cited in the answer.

Data and sources

AI visibility is not the new SEO. It is a test of the brand’s entire presence.

A model does not judge a single page. It may combine information from the company’s website, expert profiles, media, directories, reviews, product data, documentation, partner materials and any other sources it considers relevant.

If those sources are inconsistent, the offer is described in generalities and the strongest evidence lives only in a sales deck, AI has too little to go on to recommend the brand with confidence.

That is why AI visibility starts before content. It starts with clear answers to five questions:

  1. 01Who are we?
  2. 02Whom do we help?
  3. 03What are we genuinely good at?
  4. 04What evidence do we have?
  5. 05In which situations should we be considered?
AI does not recommend a company because it has called itself a “leader” many times. It needs facts, consistency and evidence it can find and verify.

THE BRANDBUSTERS MODEL

Five layers of AI brand visibility

  1. 01

    01 / ACCESS

Can search engines and search-based systems find, read and index the right content?

  2. 02

    02 / IDENTITY

Are the company name, expert, specialism, location, offer and relationships described the same way everywhere?

  3. 03

    03 / EVIDENCE

Are there specific projects, results, data, reviews, authors, sources and update dates?

  4. 04

    04 / ANSWERABILITY

Does the content answer real customer questions in a way that is easy to understand, cite and compare?

  5. 05

    05 / VALIDATION

Do other credible sources confirm the brand’s expertise, reputation and relevance?

A missing layer does not always mean invisibility. It does mean the model has fewer reasons to trust the answer and less material from which to build a recommendation.

What must work in each layer?

  1. 01

Access: first, you have to be findable.

Check the indexing of your most important pages, canonical URLs, the sitemap, robots.txt, whether readable text can be rendered, and whether key information is available without viewing an image or downloading a deck.

Content that cannot be read will not build visibility. The same applies to key information locked only inside a PDF, an image, a video or an application that search engines cannot see.

That said, do not open access to every bot without thought. The business should deliberately distinguish between indexing for search, retrieving information for answers and using data to train models.

    Decision

Decide which content should build public visibility and which should stay out of reach of external systems.

  2. 02

Identity: the model must know that different signals refer to the same business.

The brand name, full company details, domain, social profiles, authors, location, offer and specialism should form a consistent whole. Clear “About us” and “About me” pages, structured data and unambiguous links between the person, the organisation and the services all help.

If a company describes itself as an agency one day, then as a consultancy, a studio, a software house and a transformation partner, a system may not understand in which context to cite it.

    Decision

Choose one primary description of the business and a few precise areas in which the brand wants to be recognised.

  3. 03

Evidence: advantage comes from what not everyone can say.

A generic article generated from other generic articles gives no strong reason to cite it. Far more valuable are proprietary data, implementation experience, specific results, original models, comparisons, experiments, client statements and clearly attributed expert opinions.

Not every result can be disclosed. You can still show the scale of the problem, the way of thinking, the method used, the conditions of the decision and conclusions that are valuable beyond a single project.

    Decision

Identify five pieces of evidence that genuinely set the business apart from competitors, and check whether they can be found on the public website.

  4. 04

Answerability: content should help resolve a question, not merely contain a keyword.

Generative search handles complex questions well: comparisons, scenarios, selection criteria, risks and dependencies. Content therefore needs a clear thesis, logical headings, specific examples, limitations and an answer to the question “so what?”.

This is not about writing for a robot. It is about ordering the argument so that both a person and a system can grasp the point without guessing the author’s intent.

    Decision

Instead of producing another generic page about a service, answer one difficult question that customers ask just before a decision.

  5. 05

Validation: a brand cannot be the only source of its own greatness.

Client recommendations, expert publications, professional profiles, partnerships, media coverage, industry directories and materials from other credible organisations provide external validation.

None of this can be replaced by mass-producing artificial mentions. Value arises when an independent source has a genuine reason to name the company, the author or the solution.

    Decision

Check which external sources currently confirm the brand’s most important claims — and which claims still have no confirmation at all.

E-COMMERCE

In e-commerce, content is not enough. Product data quality matters too.

A shopping agent needs more than an inspiring description. It has to identify the product, variant, price, availability, seller, image, delivery and returns terms correctly.

OpenAI is developing the Agentic Commerce Protocol and a product data standard that allows ChatGPT to use merchants’ up-to-date catalogues. Product feeds and structured data used by other ecosystems play a similar role.

If the catalogue is incomplete, variants are mixed up, availability is out of date and key attributes appear only in marketing copy, an agent may skip the product or present it incorrectly.

Product data minimum

  • a stable product and variant identifier
  • an unambiguous brand and seller
  • current price and availability
  • complete attributes
  • the correct image for each variant
  • delivery, returns and purchase terms
  • regular product feed updates

Seven shortcuts that will not build lasting visibility.

  1. 01Adding an llms.txt file and expecting the brand to appear in answers automatically.
  2. 02Publishing hundreds of similar articles generated purely to cover keywords.
  3. 03Repeating “leader”, “innovative” and “highest quality” without evidence that can be checked.
  4. 04Creating a separate company identity on every platform and in every document.
  5. 05Hiding the most important information in decks, images and gated files.
  6. 06Measuring success with one question asked once of one model.
  7. 07Optimising for visibility alone, without checking whether recommendations lead to valuable traffic, enquiries or sales.
The goal is not to appear in every answer. The goal is to be present in the answers that precede a valuable customer decision.

The first 30 days

  1. WEEK 1

    Establish a baseline.

    • Select 20 to 30 real customer questions.
    • Check the answers in several relevant systems.
    • Record the presence of your brand and competitors, cited sources and errors.
    • Review Search Console data and AI-referred traffic.
  2. WEEK 2

Put identity and access in order.

    • Verify indexing and the most important technical settings.
    • Align descriptions of the company, the person, the services and contact details.
    • Check structured data and the relationships between entities.
    • Remove contradictory or outdated information.
  3. WEEK 3

    Add evidence and answers.

    • Publish or expand two pieces that answer important decision questions.
    • Add authors, dates, sources, limitations and specific examples.
    • Strengthen visible evidence: results, projects, recommendations or methods.
    • In e-commerce, fix the most important gaps in product data.
  4. WEEK 4

Measure and choose the next move.

    • Repeat the same set of questions.
    • Compare visibility, accuracy and cited sources.
    • Review traffic, visit quality and conversions.
    • Choose one area to develop further rather than producing content at volume.

How do you measure AI visibility without creating another vanity metric?

No single indicator describes the whole picture honestly. You need a small set of measures that show both presence and business value.

01Share of answers that include the brandHow often the brand appears across an agreed set of relevant questions.
02Accuracy of descriptionWhether the system correctly presents the offer, location, expertise and terms.
03Share of own sources citedWhether the answer refers to the company’s website, research or materials.
04Visibility in Google’s generative featuresData available in the relevant Search Console reports.
05AI-referred traffic and conversionsWhether visits lead to an enquiry, a purchase or another valuable action.
06Influence on the decisionWhether customers name AI as a source of discovery, comparison or confirmation of their decision.

Answers can differ between users, locations, models and successive runs. Measurement should therefore rely on a fixed set of questions and on observing the trend, not on a single screenshot.

Seven questions for the board and leadership team

  1. 01In which specific questions and situations do we want to be recommended?
  2. 02Can an external system explain unambiguously what our business does?
  3. 03What public evidence supports the brand’s most important promises?
  4. 04Is the information on our website, LinkedIn, in the media and in directories consistent?
  5. 05Which important information still exists only in decks or in employees’ heads?
  6. 06Are product data, prices, availability and terms up to date?
  7. 07How will we know that AI visibility creates business value rather than just an interesting screenshot?

Do not optimise the brand for a model’s answer. Build a brand the model can understand and justify.

AI visibility does not come from a single technical fix. It is the result of a consistent identity, accessible knowledge, credible evidence, good data and presence in sources that can be trusted.

Businesses that put these elements in order will gain more than a place in a ChatGPT or Gemini answer. They will also build a better website, sharper communication, stronger sales materials and a more credible brand.

First make the business worth recommending. Then make the reasons easy for systems to find.
